Due to a security breach on the part of a Maryland Veterans Affairs employee, information including (social security numbers!) of 26.5 million veterans has been stolen. The majority of the information is on men and women who served from 1975 to the present, but may include information on veterans who served prior to 1975, but filed claims after 1975.
http://www.kfmb.com/stories/story.51001.html contains further information. To determine if you, your friends, or family are among those compromised by this incident you call can 1-800-FED-INFO, or visit http://firstgov.gov. Legislation will be introduced shortly to ensure that those affected will be able to receive free copies of their credit reports.
PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ON TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, EVEN IF THEY THEMSELVES ARE NOT VETERANS AS IT IS LIKELY THEY KNOW PEOPLE WHO MAY NEED THIS INFORMATION.
